Arlie Russell Hochschild is the author of “The Second Shift” originally published in 1989 and republished in 2012. She is a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, and was one of the first to challenge modern economic theory, the roles of parental work and and structure in terms of gender equity.

This book, a collection of thirteen essays, is described as a global exploration of the many ways people manage their own emotions while performing the emotional labor of care-giving.

Arlie Russell Hochschild—author of the groundbreaking exploration of emotional labor, focuses squarely on the impact of social forces on the emotional side of intimate life. She has written several other books, like “The Managed Heart” and “The Outsourced Self”, in the last few years and expanded her expertise even further.
